09/02/2010 - Rt. 23 Pile-up
MONTAGUE TOWNSHIP – Around 1500hrs, a tractor trailer, heading north on state Route 23, lost its brakes, resulting in a multiple-car pileup.
Unable to stop, the driver crossed the empty lane of oncoming traffic, in an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of him, and crashed through the Citgo employee parking lot, demolishing a white 1996 Ford Taurus.
Before the truck veered into the southbound lane of Route 23, it set off a chain reaction, striking a red Ford Tundra, which collided with a white Chevy Suburban towing a camper, which rear-ended a gray Mazda 6 that rammed into a green Honda Accord.
The truck driver was extricated by the fire department and was taken to the hospital. Two others were transported and hospitalized.
Route 23 was shutdown from Clove Road in Montague to the on-ramp for Route 84 on the NJ/NY border.
Assisting agencies included: New Jersey State Police, New York State Troopers, Montague Fire Department, Sandyston Fire Department, Greenville Fire Department and St. Clare’s MICU.
